COP4834 Spring 2018 Assignments

The main outline and text for assignments for this course is located on this public web site. For students in COP4834 all submissions and references to the assignments are located inside of Florida Online. Listed here is the week, topic, and assignment.

Denotes the assignment is ready to complete

Topic and Assignment
Description
Associated Lectures

Assignment 1 - Getting Started
Install Visual Studio, Git, and Hosting - You will need to get you programming environment set up. This will get you started with what you need to be able to do all the assignments associated with this class. You will also need to start getting used to programming with C# - a language you may not be completely familiar with.
Topic - Basic Programming Concepts

Assignment 2 - Publishing to the Web
Create and Publish an Application - In this assignment you will not be programming just yet - but you will actually create and publish a full MVC .NET web site on Azure. You will not be doing any coding yet - but feel free to look ahead to assignment 3.

Topic - Windows Azure for Hosting

Assignment 3 - Form Validation
Server Side Data Validation - Deja vu - yes this one will look familiar. We are going to reproduce the form you created in COP4813 - this time using MVC and server side programming.  The MVC lectures should take you right through this one, and the Data Model here is relatively straightforward.
Topic - Using MVC
NOTE At this point in the semester you have the ability to demonstrate the use of each technology with your own project. All assignments can demonstrate the use of the required technology with your own project ideas. Note

Assignment 4 - Entity Framework
Object Relational Mapping (ORM) We are going to look at the Entity Framework a little deeper here.  There will be no requirement to use Entity Framework for projects - it does allow a convenient (but inflexible) way to manage your object relational relationships.
Topic - Using MVC

Assignment 5 - Customizing Views
We are now going to delve a little deeper into building your application. We will concentrate a bit more on the View in MVC to allow you to build more robust applications.
Topic - Using MVC

Assignment 6 -

Project Proposal

You need to develop a project proposal now for a class project. Projects can be team or solo - but you will need to create a document outlining what you propose

Assignment 7 -

Navigation System

Provide a system to allow easy navigation for your users

Provided resources

Web research

Assignment 8 - Using AJAX AJAX is an incredibly useful technology that can provide excellent enhancements to your site. In this assignment you will learn to enhance your site with AJAX and know the appropriate use of AJAX.

Assignment 9 - Security Layer Obviously most sites are not 100% open to all users - but require a login and security to access specific pages. You will apply a security layer to your site with this assignment.

COP4834 Assignment 10A - Application Testing   You simply need to demonstrate the use of automated test suites in your project (or in any one of your previous assignments). This is not a difficult task - but like so many of the other things you will do - very important.
COP4834 Assignment 11A - End User Strategies You should have your project to some level of completion. Proper development protocols mean that you really should be bringing the interface to the user and collecting feedback. Here is your chance.

COP4834 Assignment 12A - Mobile  This will be a side project that involves creating a mobile app - or you can use your own ideas and create an app based on those or you can make sure your project is mobile friendly.

Project Submission 1
Post an active link to your project to the Discussion Board. The project link or instructions should contain information ABOUT the project, purpose, audience, and a quick how to use. The purpose here is to receive feedback and review the projects of other students.

Project Submission 2
Submit all technical documentation as a pdf or word file. This should contain a full data dictionary, object and architectural diagrams but not all code. Also an installation guide (how to create on a server) should be included in the documentation.

Project Submission 3
Final project submission. Submit link, all documentation, a set of credentials for testing as user and administrator and instructions.

The Project

Students must work solo or in a group to complete a project of their own design. The objectives of the project are outlined in Assignment 6 -Project Proposal.  The project may be used in the other submissions and there are specific assignments that are tied directly to the project.

Here are some project ideas for students who might not have a project idea
